About Me:
Hi, my name is Steve Hall and I live in Torrevieja, Alicante, Spain Torrevieja and much of the Costa Blanca is a huge expat area where one of the challenges is for the newly arrived masses to learn at least some Spanish. This portal is intended for anybody to add their stories about learning the language, add articles, promote their language schools, courses or books or simply ask questions about the Spanish language.

I would welcome articles about the history of the language, the differences with the other Romance languages, the other official languages of Spain and its various dialects,. I am hoping we will have a "Palabre del Día" and other interesting features. You are also most welcome to add photos of Spain or Spanish-speaking countries.

I have another portal that I have developed over 6 years and you will find more information about Spain and the Spanish on www.thisisspain.info

Expat Life

(With apologies to /acknowledgements to a certain Mr W Gates) I recently gave a speech about 11 things they did not and will not teach would-be expats. I talked about how feel-good, commission-hungry estate agents created a generation of expats with no concept of reality and how this "dream" set them up for failure in the real Spain. Rule 1: Expat life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2 : Expats and Spaniards alike will not care about your previous life. They will expect you to accomplish s… Continue

My experiences of Learning Spanish

Learning Spanish Living in Spain has made me realise that acquiring really good Spanish will be a steep learning curve. Years ago, when I went to Mexico for a week I learned some basic phrases. I bought the Berlitz tape and phrase book. I have used their books for a large number of languages. In about a month you can cram your head with all the basic phrases of any language. The tapes work well, provided those you meet give textbook answers when you ask the way, etc. The phrases remain in your… Continue

Just a little fun

Computers (male or female) A Spanish Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish all nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. 'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Car,' however, is masculine: 'el coche.' A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was… Continue

Hi Steve,

I know you know about this comment I'm sending to everyone, but I'm sending it to you too in any case LOL

Hi Steve,
I have some Spanish language learning e-books that I have resellers rights to. I have no interest in making a profit from these, so I’m giving them away to members and visitors of our own Spanish language network at: www.spanishlanguagesite.ning.com
Steve is happy for me to tell you about our Spanish Club and so I thought I would let you know that if you fill in the simple online form that shows there with your name and email, you will be re-directed to a page where you can download these e-books for free in a zip file, and also have the opportunity of seeing a sample page from our online Spanish language course. On this particular page is one of the many video clips we have of local Spanish people talking with the transcript in English, Spanish or none at the click of a button – so helping beginners who struggle to understand and more advanced who do not need assistance.
I have put other sample videos and podcasts from our courses in our SLS Spansih Club and would love to show them to you. All the podcasts from our courses are free, which you can listen to on our main site at www.spanishlanguagesite.com by clicking the SLS Podcasts link on any page. A popup player will launch (you need flash player to view this but can easily download it for free if you haven't got it already) and you will be able to choose which of the 59 podcasts to listen too. We plan on adding a further 50+ podcasts to this list when our advanced course is finished. These later podcasts will be totally in Castilian Spanish as befits the advanced course, so bookmark the site if this is of interest to you.

Hi Steve, thanks for the welcome, truth be told it's great to meet other people who also have an interest in Spanish although my fiance and I are very new to the language. We've spent the last 9months learning German and now know enough to keep learning by ourselves but Spanish is a very different language.

As for links etc, I'm always happy to link to great sites, especially if they are in the same niche as me.
